SKETCHES

“A beautiful body perishes, but a work of art dies not.”
- Leonardo de Vinci

“Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.”
- Edgar Degas

This year we are introducing my dad’s sketches.

My dad studied Figure Painting through art classes he took at Berkeley over the 25-year period my parents lived in Berkeley, most of it within walking distance of campus. This Art Class was a sought-after course, always with a waitlist. During the pandemic, the classes were held over Zoom and online streaming, and with Megan’s help, he continued these art classes up until they moved to AZ in late 2022. In addition to these Figure Classes, he also sketched models in his weekly art class with Anthony.  (he’d been in Anthony’s classes for well over 30 years, starting when they lived in Piedmont, once my sister and I were in College and left home.) Anthony’s class became like an extended family and he would travel throughout Europe with Anthony’s art group and friends every year and would sketch sights and people throughout these trips as well. These were quick sketches he’d make of the sights but also, while in Europe, he’d sketch what is referenced as ‘studies’ for future full-scaled paintings. My dad loved learning and seeking more in art, art techniques, history, and anything actually. He was a very quick sketch artist. He painted quickly in all mediums.

This all-new 2024 Winter Exhibit features these studies and figure sketches. My dad has so many sketches:  in pencil, ink, some in charcoal, and some with added color through watercolor. He has so many sketches that I’m dividing them up into multiple exhibits. With two separate sketch exhibits this winter. This is the first of the two: ‘Sketches I.’

There are prints available from this exhibit and they are stunning! They look so good framed individually, in groups, or mixed on an art wall. For all prints, I use the top (and one of the only) Giclee printers available for scanning and printing. Tony is located in Berkeley and works with artists all over the Bay Area and the nation. The paper for these sketch prints is 100% smooth hot-press cotton paper from Italy. It is a heavy and beautiful matte Glicee print, using archival ink. I love them all and am excited for this all-new exhibit.
